pattern.
The
play
is
founded
on this
familiar
plot
, in
which
a
Chinese
Mandarin
arranges
his
daughter's
marriage
to a
wealthy
merchant
whom
she
dislikes.
She
escapes
with her
beloved
, the
Mandarin's
secretary;
but the
rejected
suitor
plots
revenge
and
causes
their
death.

fairy
queen
mother
of the
Chinese
paradise
transforms
them into
white
doves
