| Abstract/Summary | 2-P-2 The Story of Anthracite (Marionette and Shadowgraph) The action of the play takes place in 1808, when Judge Jesse Fell of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, is endeavoring to prove to his wife and friends that anthracite is a practicable fuel for general use. He builds himself a special grate for this purpose. Tired, he falls asleep before the grate with which he is experimenting. In his dream appears a vision of how coal was formed through the earth's ages. Prehistoric life moves through dramatic scenes as monstrous animals, from dinosaur to mammoth, appear in succession to fight their battles for existence. The dream ends with a shadowgraph representing the Wilkes-Barre of the future with miners working the coal seams underneath. The judge awakens to find his vision a reality: the coal is burning in the grate. The play ends with a Miners' Chorus. Weight 22 lbs", p. 51. |
