It
has a
continuous
screw-thread
closure
at the
neck
of the
jar
with a
screw-on
zinc
lid
lined
with
milk-glass.
Ball
,
Mason
or
fruit
jars
are
used
in
canning
to
preserve
fruit
,
vegetables
and
meat.
In
1858
,
John
Mason
patented
a
continuous
screw-thread
closure
for the
neck
of
canning
jars.
The
improved
closure
,
along
with a
rubber
gasket
,
made
for an
air
tight
seal.
Settlers
canned
fresh
food
which
could
then be
safely
eaten
much
later.
The
jars
can
be
reused
and are
seldom
thrown
away.
Home
canners
use
Ball
jars
today
even
though
the
safe
freezing
of
foods
has
decreased
the
need
for
much
canning.
