NotesThe pioneers found no clay in South Florida suitable for firing stoneware or crockery. Often pioneers arrived from other locations bringing their dishes with them. Pioneers purchased needed items from catalogs or the general store. Sometimes they picked up crockery from wrecks or reefs. Stoneware was sturdy and could be used in cooking, baking storing liquids and as serving dishes.
