Bean
hamper.
Date
1950s
Description
1 bean hamper: wood, metal; 52 cm.
Notes
The
wooden
bean
hamper
was a
standard
receptacle
for the
harvesting
,
transportation
and
selling
of
green
beans
in
Broward
County
(as
well
as
elsewhere).
Unlike
the
rectangular-shaped
crates
used
for
other
winter
vegetables
,
such
as
peppers
,
squash
and
cucumbers
, the
bean
hamper
was
cylindrical
with a
wider
mouth
than
base.
Although
bean
hampers
could
vary
in
size
, the
standard
volume
was a
bushel.
Farmers
transported
the
bean
hampers
from the
fields
to
market
for
sale.
The
standard
sized
hampers
allowed
those
buying
(usually
brokers)
the
beans
to
rapidly
calculate
the
size
of their
purchase.
Filled
in the
fields
, the
hampers
of
beans
were
loaded
on
trains
and
transported
to their
final
destination.
Usually
a
grocery
store
clerk
in
northern
cities
such
as
New
York
,
Detroit
or
Chicago
removed
the
beans
from the
hampers
for
sale
to their
customers.
