1 tray: stainless steel; 30 x 40 cm.
Notes
The
mess
tray
with
six
compartments
was
discovered
during
an
archaeological
dig
at the
North
Perry
Airport
in
Pembroke
Pines.
The
back
of the
tray
is
engraved:
"USN
-
CARROLLTON
MFG.
CO."
The
tray
was
manufactured
for the
United
States
Navy.
Dairy
farm
pastures
along
the
fringes
of the
Everglades
in
southeast
Florida
were
ideal
for
military
airfields.
The
land
was
level
,
mostly
cleared
and
sparsely
populated.
South
Broward
pioneer
Henry
D.
Perry
started
his
dairy
north
and
south
of
Pembroke
Road
in
1923.
In the
early
1940s
, the
Navy
purchased
over
400
acres
from
Perry
and
built
the
North
Perry
Air
Station
as
part
of a
chain
of
training
centers
in
South
Florida.
By
1943
, the
field
was
commissioned
with an
Operations
Building
serving
as a
bunk
room
,
mess
hall
, and
radio
repair
shop.
A
three-story
section
served
as the
control
tower.
The
personnel
assigned
to the
field
were
support
for the
trainees
flying
in from the
main
base
at
Miami.
