| Notes | The Amphitrite was a converted monitor-class naval vessel brought to Fort Lauderdale in 1931 to serve as a novel floating hotel. Depression era brochures advertised the hotel as the ultimate luxury experience. A menu from March 1931 offered filet mignon, oysters, or fricassee of chicken, appetizer, vegetable, soup, fish, salad, beverage and dessert for $1.25. Originally docked to the west of the Coast Guard Base, the Amphitrite was blown to the shores of neighboring Idlewyld during the Hurricane of 1935. It was then relocated near the center of the Las Olas Causeway, where it is shown in this photograph. |
