NotesAfter the Hurricane of 1926 slammed into the community, business in Dania suffered its worst slump in memory. To reverse the downtrend, and to erase a debt of the new Methodist Church and to reestablish confidence in the community, town officials staged Dania's first Tomato Day Festival on May 17, 1927. Because of Dania's global renown for growing tomatoes, the day was named in honor of the red, ripe, juicy fruit. The first Tomato Day did more than raise money for the Dania Methodist Church; it provided a time for the community to gather and to have fun. Milton Berle is seen with Betty Vain, the 1950 Tomato Queen.
