Seminole
woman
with
mortar
and
pestle.
Date
1940s
Notes
The
homemade
mortar
was
carved
usually
from a
cypress
tree
trunk.
By
using
hot
coals
and a
fan
to
increase
the
heat
, the
trunk
was
slowly
hollowed
out
through
a
process
of
burning
and
scraping.
As the
coals
ate
away
the
wood
,
Seminoles
would
scrape
away
the
inside
until
a
suitable
opening
for a
mortar
cup
was
produced.
The
pestle
was
made
from a
sapling
and
tapered
down
to a
point
so
it
would
fit
inside
the
mortar.
The
heaviest
part
of the
pestle
was at its
top.
This
simple
engineering
design
enabled
the
pestle's
weight
to
come
down
with
full
force.
As a
result
, the
dry
corn
was
broken
into
