The
Clark
home
and
Annie
Clark's
Diner.
Date
1920
Notes
Annie
Clark
, an
excellent
cook
,
opened
a
small
dining
room
on the
edge
of the
New
River
at the
foot
of
Brickell
Avenue
during
the
first
decade
of the
twentieth
century.
After
the
death
of her
husband
in
1917
, she
bought
a
house
centrally
located
at
Southeast
2nd
Street
and
2nd
Avenue
in
downtown
Fort
Lauderdale.
She
began
taking
in
boarders
and
converted
the
first
floor
of their
home
into a
diner
which
served
the
town's
working
people.
The
price
of a
full
breakfast
was
17cents.
If the
price
alone
did
not
attract
a
customer
, the
aroma
of
cooking
food
that
wafted
out
of the
kitchen
window
next
to the
main
sidewalk
did.
Dinners
were
50
cents
for
all
you
could
eat.
Many
people
throughout
Fort
Lauderdale
saved
their
money
for
weeks
to
enjoy
one
these
huge
meals.
