Notes
The
Chamber
of
Commerce
opened
the
Fort
Lauderdale
Service
Men's
Center
in
October
1942.
It
was
located
in the
100
block
of
East
Las
Olas
Boulevard
and
served
United
States
Navy
trainees
in
Fort
Lauderdale
and
thousands
of
other
members
of the
armed
forces
stationed
throughout
Broward
County.
The
Center
had a
dance
floor
,
library
,
large
dining
room
and
lunch
counter.
Hundreds
of
volunteer
women
staffed
the
Center
serving
as
hostesses
and as
dancing
partners.
Free
sandwiches
were
paid
for by the
city.
It
was
considered
one
of the
busiest
and
happiest
places
in
wartime
South
Florida.
Many
of the
individuals
stationed
in
Broward
County
returned
after
the
war
,
helping
to
create
the
area's
post-war
population
boom.
