NotesThe Chamber of Commerce opened the Fort Lauderdale Service Men's Center in October 1942. It was located in the 100 block of East Las Olas Boulevard and served United States Navy trainees in Fort Lauderdale and thousands of other members of the armed forces stationed throughout Broward County. The Center had a dance floor, library, large dining room and lunch counter. Hundreds of volunteer women staffed the Center serving as hostesses and as dancing partners. Free sandwiches were paid for by the city. It was considered one of the busiest and happiest places in wartime South Florida. Many of the individuals stationed in Broward County returned after the war, helping to create the area's post-war population boom.
