| Notes | Much of the Fort Lauderdale police force was stationed at the beach on July 23, 1961 where one of the wade-ins occurred. This photo was taken at East Las Olas Boulevard and Almond Avenue; the policemen are identified on the photograph. Wade-in participants included 2) Eula Johnson (president of the local NAACP); 4) Mathew H. McCray; 5) Horace Judson; and 6) Joseph Jordan (in the wagon). The city eventually sued Mizell, Johnson, and the NAACP in the Broward County Circuit Court to stop the wade-ins. A year later, Broward Circuit Judge Ted Cabot ruled against the city, effectively desegregating the public beaches of Broward County. |
