Franklin
Sheen
was a
West
Palm
Beach
surveyor
who
worked
for the
Florida
Canal
Company
and the
Florida
East
Coast
Railway.
He
is
generally
credited
with
giving
Pompano
its
name
(the
city
did
not
adopt
the
name
Pompano
Beach
until
1947).
According
to
one
account
,
Sheen
was
dining
with a
local
family
and was
served
fried
pompano;
he
enjoyed
the
meal
so
much
he
wrote
the
name
of the
fish
on his
map
,
thus
giving
the
community
its
name.
