| Summary | New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia was a champion of commercial aviation. During his administration, the city purchased North Beach Airport from Curtiss-Wright and immediately began to quintuple its 105 acres with 17 million cubic yards of landfill scooped from Rikers Island's mountains of cinder, ash and refuse. More than 20, 000 relief workers from the Works Progress Administration worked around the clock on the project. The airport was dedicated on October 15, 1939 and later renamed La Guardia Airport. |
