It is mentioned that bartenders were able to keep customers only by turning the channel selector from basketball or hockey to television stations that were showing Roots. The report also stated, "Many observers feel that the T.V. Series left whites with a more sympathetic view of blacks by giving them a greater appreciation of black history." It is also stated that parents started naming their newborn babies after characters in the series, especially the lead character, Kunta Kinte.
