Alex Haley married Nannie Branch in 1941 and divorced her in 1964. They had two children: Lydia Ann and William Alexander. While he was working on The Autobiography of Malcolm X in 1964, he marred Juliette Collins and divorced her in 1972. They had a daughter together, Cynthia Gertrude Haley. Alexander Murray Palmer Haley was born in 1921 in Itaca, New York and raised in North Carolina. He is the eldest of three sons born to Bertha George Palmer and Simon Alexander Haley. His first book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, launched Mr. Haley's career in 1965. The book rapidly became mandatory reading at many schools.
